MTN 8 Cup final showdown at FNB Stadium
September 2011,
The MTN 8 is South Africa's oldest and one of the most anticipated soccer cup competitions in our sporting calendar.
The tournament comprises the top eight teams that finished in that order at the close of the ABSA Premiership season. The first round is structured such that the team at the top of the previous season's table plays the team that finished eighth; second place plays seventh; third plays sixth and fourth plays fifth, with the semi-finals being played over two legs.
Three matches are played at the start of the new season, with the fourth match seeing the final two teams vying for the highly coveted R8 million grand prize.
The cellular corporation, MTN has been sponsoring the event since 2008, with previous sponsors being BP and SAA.
It’s a small wonder why Soccer City FNB Stadium was packed to the rafters this year – the finalist were SA’s most loved teams – Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs.
The two rival teams battled to the end, with Orlando Pirates scoring their winning goal by star Midfielder Oupa Manyesa, at extra time.
Orlando Pirates has subsequently won the tournament eight times since 1972 this year being their ninth win.
The Bucs are proving to be tough contenders, winning most of the tournaments in the last season. It looks like they are geared to swoop this season’s cups as well.
