Greening Soweto Schools
June 2011,
Primedia Outdoor has embarked on a series of greening initiatives for the youth of Soweto. On Friday, 17th June – together with City Parks, they donated 3 trees to the Umbuyise Art School in Orlando West’s Vilakazi Street.
"In support of Youth and Arbour month, we have teamed up with a series of schools in Soweto to get the youth geared in taking care of their environment. Umbuyise Art School is the first of a growing greening initiative by Primedia Outdoor, teaming up with City Parks," said Seshnie Naidu, Primedia Outdoor’s Marketing Manager.
Umbuyise Art School is a community based art school, where children in the area are taught basic art skills as an after school activity. The school is free and run by community leader and socialite Tshepo Ramutumbu. "I started the project to get the children of Orlando West involved in the arts because art is an important and often overlooked aspect of our lives – music, drawing, painting and dance – these are all art forms that are lacking in our community. The school aims to make these art forms easily accessible to township children," said Tshepo Ramutumbu.
The school caters for over 50 children, ranging from ages six to 16 years of age.
Primedia Outdoor and the art students planted three trees around the school, which is situated on the Soweto TV premises – all happily getting their hands dirty for a good cause.
The three trees have been named after Orlando West’s Struggle icons – Nelson Mandela, Albertina Sisulu and Mbuyisa Makhubu.
