Walking the Talk

July 2011,

Many people showed up at Emmerentia’s Marks Park to participate in the largest walking event this past weekend - The Talk Radio 702 Walk The Talk. The attendance was eclectic with children in prams or toddling behind their parents, to celebrities and even dogs taking part.

The "walkers" took to the walk with much joy and enthusiasm – some huffing and puffing through it, while others power walked like pros. The walk also provided live entertainment by the legendary PJ Powers and included some celebrity walkers.

We spotted a few sportsmen like soccer player, Lucas Radebe, cricket player Shaun Pollock as well as the retired boxing champion, Baby Jake Matlala.

Since the walk’s inception in 2000, the number of walkers has increased rapidly, with 50 000 people registered for this year’s walk – and an estimated 55 000 total of people who attended the actual event, with huge support from corporates who provide hospitality tents for their guests and staff members.

This initiative highlights how people are tired of being victimized by criminals and how the nation is united in fighting crime in South Africa. The event has changed from just being a walk against crime to become a family get-together and work team building experience.
